Wall thickness = 350mm (excluding plasters and renders)
Traditionally we can find cob walling to have no cavity and that they were/are predominantly constructed as solid walling. Monolithic cob walls boast significant thicknesses (usually 600mm) and its these dimensions that compound cob as an effective, efficient and structurally competent building medium. In addition to its strength, mass cob walling naturally provides sound and warmth insulations that deliver a comfortable and regular temperature for the dweller. Whilst this has been proven by historical fact-found evidence and modern technologies, there continues to be doubt from the decision-makers as to the whether mass cob construction provides quantifiable ‘metrics’ to satisfy the system…the very same system that appears to have close relations and/or immediate interest/investment in the use of concrete products. Don’t get me wrong, concrete is an amazing material in which we all pretty much rely upon and use, but clearly CO2e figures demand that the manufacture and use be reduced. As an old sage once said to me ‘if you can’t beat them, play them at their own game’………….and so here we have it…..cob block cavity walling. Easy to install, cost effective, CO2e 95% less than that of concrete blocks and unparalleled cradle-to-gate statistics.
