Recommended binding mortars
Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL2) + coarse sand (2.5 parts sand to 1 part NHL2 by volume)
Non-hydraulic lime (lime putty) + coarse sand (2.5 parts sand to 1 part lime by volume)
Sieved, clayey soil + water (consistency should more wet than dry)
Preparation
Ensure that the accepting surfacing is moistened prior to a mortar bed being introduced. This can be achieved with either a low-pressure water sprayer or a soft bristled hand brush dipped in water and applied to the surfacing. NB These operations are not essential, however they will ‘buy the user some time’ to ensure the cob brick is levelled accurately before the mortar starts to cure.
Specialist Skills
There are no specialist skills required to install these cob bricks. A general builder or a competent DIY’er can achieve effective results with relative ease.
Precautions
Cob bricks can be stored inside or outside. If stored outdoors – keep the cob bricks off of the ground and cover with a weatherproof sheeting – do not allow the cob bricks to become moisture/water saturated.
Do not drop these cob bricks. Whilst our cob bricks deliver high compression strengths within any given wall they have minimal tensile strength.
Handle with care.
