FAQ’s
What kind of base should my pizza oven be built on?
The base for the pizza oven has to be strong, solid and fireproof. For our construction of a pizza oven we simply created a 2″ timber upstand and poured a concrete mix. You can use a brick base (frogs down) either mortared together or tightly bonded. Patio slabs (450mmx450mm) turned upside down would also work.
I have built the base for the pizza oven. Where do I start with building the pizza oven itself?
1st (and 2nd) course cob bricks are slightly curved and all the same size (there are 28 of these and shouldn’t be confused with the 36 tapered cob bricks). Place 14 of these cob bricks onto the base DRY (do not use your mortar yet) and create the appropriate diameter of your 1st course. You also have 4 ‘cut’ cob bricks on your pallet, 2 of these will create the opening [of the pizza oven] within the 1st course and the other 2 will continue the opening on the 2nd course. Once laid-out, you can start wet-laying the cob bricks.
Does this oven require a chimney?
No. This oven is designed to hold hot coals from a secondary source. However, if you want to start the fire in the pizza oven and feed it with wood and/or charcoal then we recommend a cob brick be removed (or not installed) from the back, this’ll ensure the draw of air required to build up the fire and heat.
Can the pizza oven be left outside?
Yes. The pizza oven should be situated outside and when not being used we recommend that it be covered with a weatherproof sheet.
Are bigger versions of this pizza oven available?
Yes. The 900mm diameter kit is the smallest possible diameter with this brick shape and the largest diameter pizza oven with this brick radii is 1.6m diameter
What consistency should the earth mortar be mixed to?
We have found that the most effective way to mix the dry soil with water is to add the water FIRST (into a bucket) then slowly add the clayey soil whilst stirring. When the mixture resembles the texture of porridge or rice pudding then it is ready to use.
What happens if I mess this up? I’m not a builder!
You can’t go irreversibly wrong with this! If you’re not quite happy with the shape, or roundness or anything…remove the bricks, remix the mortar and start over.
Are these cob bricks available to buy individually and in bulk?
Yes. These cob bricks are £2.50 each (+ delivery + VAT). Earth Mortar (15kg bag) – £8.50each (+ delivery + VAT)
Useful Tips
-
Build up 3 courses then fill (and keep filling) with sand and/or aggregate. This will help stabilise the remaining cob blocks for the dome. When completed, remove the infill.
-
Mixed mortar will stay useable for up to 2 months if kept in an airtight container or bag.
-
Before you use the pizza oven, give the inside of the dome a thorough brushing with a stiff-bristled brush.
