Most commonly, cob blocks are pretty much a standard size – 450mmx225mmx100mm – mirroring concrete block dimensions. Here at Earth Blocks Ltd we too manufacture and supply standard-sized cob blocks and these have been a rather limited staple of availability for the practitioner over many years (including myself). Therefore, here at Earth Blocks Ltd we decided that ‘the norm’ should perhaps shuffle over sometimes and invite alternative sizes to the party…..and this is why we developed the 125mm cob block.
So how would our 125mm cob blocks (introduced on edge) benefit the cob builder, self-builder and/or architect?
- There are only 12 units p/s/m (as opposed to 24 laid flat)
- Almost 50% common binder mortar saving p/s/m
- Greater wall thickness for outer/inner walls in cavity walling
- More load-bearing capacity
To accompany our 125mm cob blocks we have also developed a 125mm single-rounded cob block range to fortify their position within new build or self-build cob walling ie corners of the wall, and window/door reveals. These rounded cob products satisfy the designer and end-user that angle-beading (which entails additional material expense, labour costs and a rather susceptible ‘fragile corner’) is an unnecessary consideration.
