Building with earth has been around for millennia. Middle-eastern countries continue to practice it and many parts of India still use earth as the go-to construction medium. Everywhere else on the planet ‘dabbles’ with it! Surprising really, when one considers that widespread adoption and usage of this material was commonplace, particularly here in Cornwall and other parts of the UK.

It is safe to say that our ancient cob builders weren’t necessarily thinking about how such a natural material makes a zero impact on the environment…..they used this material because of its abundance, was readily available and it didn’t require a monetary purchase.
Sustainabilty
Modern day perspectives of using earth as a building medium are slowly starting to eclipse mainstream reliance on fossil-fuel-guzzling products. This upward trend is very encouraging. If we can collectively continue to deliver these principles to the policy makers, we may witness more stringent parameters put in place at source, manufacture and principally, the design stage. Moreover, an awakening to tried and tested building mediums can’t be bad thing!

Whilst we don’t have data on all cob block manufacturers in the UK, we can share our specifications. Presently, cob block manufacturing has no regulations…..there’s nothing to stop anyone making a mud brick and using it for construction!
